BIFF’s “Come to Jesus” Moment

Upstate Filmmakers Bring Electric Jesus to the Beaufort International Film Festival By Mark Shaffer   The Greenville-base filmmaking team of Emily Reach White and her husband, Chris, made a big first impression at the 2015 Beaufort International Film Festival. Their feature Cinema Purgatorio took home trophies for Best Comedy and Audience Choice. For the 2018 festival the Whites (Chris writes, directs and acts while Emily produces) have an original screenplay in competition. A portion of Chris’ long-gestating passion project will be read along with others at the Screenwriter’s Workshop, Thursday evening, February 22nd. The Whites, however, have a twist or two up their sleeves. I spoke to them by phone about the aftermath of Purgatorio, the economics of making movies in South Carolina, Christian hair bands, plugging “Electric Jesus” into BIFF and a strange encounter with Bill Murray.

BIFF Turns Twelve

The Beaufort International Film Festival Marks a Dozen, February 21-25Interview by Mark Shaffer “€œEverything I learned I learned from the movies.”€ – Audrey Hepburn The scene takes place in downtown Beaufort in the wee small hours of a clear February night. A small group of people spill out of Breakwater Restaurant and Bar onto the deserted sidewalks of Carteret Street. The last of the After Party holdouts mill about and shuffle, exchange hugs, promises, last laughs and a few tears. Wearily and reluctantly they part and fade into the night and the 11th annual Beaufort International Film Festival is officially over.

From the “Worst” to the Best

The unlikely success story of Hank’s Low Country She Crab Soup For most families Saturday is a day of ritual – baseball practice, dance lessons, fishing, picnics on the beach, shopping, golf, a trip to Charleston or Savannah, but for many the ritual is to head to the Port Royal Farmer’s Market at the Navy Heritage Park, open 9 – 12 Saturdays, rain or shine, to get the best food in the Lowcountry. Tents are set up and loyal customers arrive on schedule to check out the freshest vegetables, eggs, shrimp, oysters in season, wonderful homemade breads, cheeses to die for, fruits, scones, pasta, bagels, plants, coffees, cookies, birds of prey to be admired, and, of course, she crab soup.

Taking Wing with History

Up and Away with The World-Famous GEICO Skytypers Story by Mark ShafferPhotos by Mark Shaffer and courtesy of the GEICO Skytypers Once again I’m sitting in the back seat of an airplane built to train the pilots of the Greatest Generation, staring at an instrument panel that makes my car look like a starship. It’s a blustery day in the Lowcountry as we prep for to take off from the Marine Corps Air Station to fly wing-tip-to-wing-tip with the world-famous GEICO Skytypers. This is the second of three media flights scheduled for the day and all four planes have a reporter strapped into the backseat sporting a 40-pound parachute and a life vest.

Burger Beat Compendium

The Beat is back and hungry for more. Story and Photos by Mark Shaffer Charles Kuralt once wrote that in America, “You can find your way across this country using burger joints the way a navigator uses stars.” A lot has changed since Kuralt wrote that line. There are far fewer of those stars thanks to the relentless flood of corporate fast food. Back in the day a burger was something made by hand and served up at hometown diners and drive-ins with names like Ruth’s and Big Al’s. My own hometown burger joint (Ruth’s in Hartsville, SC) has been family owned and operated since 1945. Located just a few blocks from the high school, it’s still the first place anyone looks for truant students.

Return of the Ribaut Social Club

Anchorage 1770 Serves Up a Saucy Side of History Story and Photos by Mark Shaffer €œA recipe is a story that ends with a good meal. Pat Conroy, Author & Cook There ought to be a law, was something I heard a lot as a child growing up in the South. My best friend’s mother used it constantly and applied it liberally. €œThere ought to be a law, she’d say, €œthat anyone with a butt that big shouldn’€™t be able to buy pants that tight. A brief pause for effect and, €œBless her heart. €
