The term “chamber music” was coined during the Classical period but the concept of art music for a small, conductor-less ensemble, performed in intimate settings with one player on a part has been an aspect of western musical communication since ancient Greece. Enjoyed by all strata of society and performed by both amateur and professional groups, it has been described as “music among friends.” USCB Chamber Music follows the concert model established during the 1800’s: performances in an intimate setting with a small number of performers playing for an attentive audience.

Bill Bogle, Jr.’s Eloquent Light

Art League Gallery will host Eloquent Light, a collection of landscape photography by local artist Bill Bogle, Jr., this October. The exhibit includes familiar Lowcountry scenes of Spanish moss-draped live oaks and oceanfront dunes, the vibrant red rock formations of the American west, and solemn views along the New England coast. Bogle’s passion and success lie in recording moments when the light reveals his subjects at their most meaningful.

By Margaret Evans, EditorI’ve been hearing the word “orientation” a lot lately.             My daughter’s friends have been going through their various college “orientations,” learning what it’s like to live away from home for the first time in their young lives. Meanwhile, Amelia is halfway across the universe in Ostrava, Czech Republic, struggling to “orient” herself to a new and very different culture. In a few days, she’ll join 70 other Rotary Youth Exchange students – from all over the world – in Trenchin, Slovakia, for her district’s official “orientation” weekend.

The University of South Carolina Beaufort presents the Department of Visual Art & Design 2019 Faculty Exhibition at the Sea Islands Center Gallery now through Sept. 21. An opening reception will take place Friday, Sept. 13, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. The Sea Islands Gallery is located at 1106 Carteret Street. Contact the gallery for current hours. This year’s exhibition features a diverse collection of work from seven artists.
