A whole bunch more simply showed up to see what all the buzz was about. Familiar faces mingle with the rookies, friendships are rekindled, partnerships are formed, and the post-screening pub-crawls pass into legend.

The Queen of the Bay Rules Once Again By Mark Shaffer   If Frank and Amy Lesesne had to choose a theme song for their inn, Willie Nelson’s “I’d Have to be Crazy” seems appropriate. Friends and family wondered if they’d gone insane (rhymes with Lesesne) when they decided to flee successful careers in Atlanta and start a new life on the Carolina coast. But when they set their sights on transforming this storied 18th century tabby behemoth into a luxury inn, well…

Port Royal’s New Address for Flavor

1635 On The Avenue,Restaurant & Spirits Story and photos by Mark Shaffer Lorett Hayes says she ended up in the restaurant business by accident. Son of Santini: Conroy on Film

An encore presentation of a conversation with bestselling author Pat Conroy about his work from the page to the screen Story and Photos by Mark Shaffer October 29th the ‘Pat Conroy at 70 Literary Festival’ kicks off with a special screening of The Great Santini at the USCB Center for the Arts. The film was a cinematic landmark for South Carolina: the first major motion picture to shoot in Beaufort, the first of several Conroy adaptations, and the movie that put the state – and the Lowcountry – on Hollywood’s hot sheet. I’m set to moderate a post-screening panel with the author and some of the film’s stars, including Michael O’Keefe and David Keith. (Keith was also in The Lords of Discipline.) This is familiar ground and territory I never tire of covering.

Burgers with a View

The Burger Beat heads to Port Royal’s Back Porch Grill Story and photos by Mark Shaffer When we first cooked up this column I swore that I would never, ever, under any circumstance quote Jimmy Buffett’s “Cheeseburger in Paradise.” In my opinion it marks the end of J.B.’s relevance as the free spirited poet laureate of the Conch Republic and the beginning of a brand. And then I end up on the deck of a marina bar overlooking the Intra-coastal Waterway shaded by massive live oaks and all I can hear in my head is that damn song…

A Sound Foundation

A conversation about the Port Royal Sound Foundation with director Jody Hayward Interview and Photos by Mark Shaffer On a breezy Saturday in mid-May a mob of people gather at the old Lemon Island Marina in the shadow of the 170 bridge at low tide. The once derelict property has recently been transformed into the Port Royal Sound Foundation Maritime Center. Today an unprecedented number of volunteers have turned out to build a huge oyster reef along the shoreline of the Center’s Chechessee river waterfront. Made of bagged oyster shell, recycled crab traps and specially designed concrete blocks, the reef will serve as a living research project and classroom as it rebuilds a strip of long lost marsh habitat. It is also a metaphor for what the non-profit Port Royal Sound Foundation is all about, says Director Jody Hayward.
