Interview by Margaret Evans “Infectious Enthusiasm” and “Scary Smart.” Those are the two phrases that keep cycling through my mind as I sit talking with Randy Coy about his new venture, The Bible Student, which opens at Habersham on Saturday, Oct 27th, in the middle of Harvest Festival. That’s right: There in the hustling, bustling Habersham Marketplace – along with the food and the music and the hayrides and the costume contest – a place called The Bible Student will make its debut. Seems unusual, doesn’t it? Well, from what I can glean, there’s nothing “usual” about Randy or the new business he’s opening with his daughter Kristin. In fact, I’m not even sure “business” is the right word. The one thing I am sure of? I’m intrigued.

Photos by Eric Smith, Captured Moments Photography Last week, I had the great pleasure of sitting down with Penney Dawson, Velma Polk and Elaine Lake, soon to be renowned throughout Beaufort and beyond as the Honky Tonk Angels. The three women, who barely knew each other until recently, have become fast friends who finish each other’s sentences, step on each other’s punch lines, and clearly delight in each other’s company. On October 20th, they’ll bring that infectious camaraderie – and some sweet singing chops – to the USCB Center for the Arts in the musical comedy “Honky Tonk Angels.”

On being part of the Fall 2012 Lowcountry Class… There are times in life when we must revel… not because we’re singing our own praises, but because we are honored and thankful. I am in the midst of one of my proudest achievements, and I want to rejoice. Because, quite frankly, I’ve worked hard to deserve it. Some might say I’m being pretentious, but I know better about myself. I do not have a pompous personality. My disposition is more modest, and I know the difference between being proud and ostentatious. And I want my daughters to understand the distinction as well. Confidence in women is attractive, admirable and necessary.
