Area WW II veterans share their stories in a new documentary… Certain events profoundly influence the fabric of everyday culture. War is such an event. It impacts human emotion, nature and intellect. It inspires heroic deeds. It reveals a measure of loyalty, devotion to duty and spirit of sacrifice not normally seen.  Everyday people reach out to help in the “effort,” and, suddenly, no task or mission is too small or too great. “Shoe Box Memories” is a documentary that, in its dialogue with a handful of veterans, pays tribute to all individuals who contributed to the effort.

Where, How and Why?

USCB to host Saga of Secession tour led by two acclaimed historians Charleston was agog with excitement in the early morning of December 20, 1860. Crowds had gathered in the streets and waited through the night.  Finally news broke that the Ordinance of Secession was ready for signatures.  The 169 delegates, led by members of the Beaufort District, unanimously voted and signed the parchment document.  South Carolina became the first state of the Union to secede! – from Dr. Lawrence Rowland’s book, The History of Beaufort County, South Carolina Join the USCB Saga of Secession historic tour on Saturday, December 18, 2010 on the 150th anniversary of the signing and learn the answers to these questions: Who were these Beaufort Planters who led this rebellion? Wadsworth Returns

December 12 will be a night for the lush sounds of strings and piano when Mr. Chamber Music himself returns to Beaufort for the USCB holiday chamber music concert.   The audience will have what has become for us a rare treat when the venerable Charles Wadsworth joins the young sensation from Korea, Jeewon Park at the Steinway grand for a Schubert duet.  USCB’s Artistic Director, host and cellist Edward Arron will also join Mr. Wadsworth in another Schubert piece, the haunting and exquisite song, “An die musik.” The evening will also showcase the extraordinary talents of internationally acclaimed violinist Yosuke Kawasaki, who is the Concertmaster of the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa under Director Pinchas Zukerman.   A highlight of the program will be the powerful and heart-wrenching Smetana Piano Trio played by Kawasaki, Park and Arron.

Creatures Great & Small

Taking pictures is second nature to most residents and visitors to Beaufort. We love photographing the outstanding beauty and nature that surrounds us. Those who enjoy it as a hobby have joined the Photography Club of Beaufort.  Each year the organization has a year long photo project.  This year it was “Creatures Great and Small”.    A majority of the 65 members in the club submitted photos… from egrets feeding their young, to pets to African wild animals.  There are even a few abstract surprises in store.

The Town Crier

“Can you remember the last time you cried?” My pastor posed that question to the congregation in his sermon Sunday morning. From my perch in the choir loft, I looked out at the sea of polite, inscrutable faces before me – they don’t call us Presbyterians the “frozen chosen” for nothin’ – and wondered (doubtfully) if anybody else was thinking what I was thinking:  “That’s easy! It was about 20 minutes ago, during the first hymn. I LOVE that one… it’s got all those great Alleluias…”

Small Town Silver

The South Carolina State Museum is teaming again with “the Charleston Silver Lady,” Dawn E. Corley, to present “Small Town Silver,” an on-the-road version of the popular antique silver program currently offered by the museum in conjunction with the recently held-over exhibit South Carolina Silver: Varieties in Society 1750 – 1935. First stop is Walterboro, on Thursday, Nov. 18, where Antiques & Collectibles of Walterboro, located at 220 E. Washington Street, will host two sessions of Corley’s workshops:  a morning session from 10 a.m. – noon and an afternoon session from 4 – 6 p.m.

Holiday Gallery Walk

Old Town Bluffton’s thriving and eclectic art community will host its annual Holiday Gallery Walk on Friday, November 19, from 3 – 8 pm.  Wine and refreshments will be served by each gallery.  Visitors can also enjoy live music and browse through Old Town’s “walkable” galleries on Boundary, Church, May River and Calhoun Streets throughout the entire event.  The event is sponsored by the Old Town Bluffton Merchants’ Society with funding from local A-tax dollars.  Hundreds of visitors to the area and local art patrons have traditionally enjoyed this local art experience.  The event will showcase Bluffton’s local talent and is a great resource for one-of-a-kind gifts. Wine and refreshments will complete the event on the streets of Old Town.  Galleries and shops will be “lit up” for the holidays.  The community can show its support for the arts, restaurants and shops in Bluffton by attending this fun event and having a great time! This year is a perfect opportunity to support your community by shopping locally.
