The Pat Conroy Literary Center’s Visiting Writers Series presents Thomas McConnell reading from his debut novel The Wooden King at NeverMore Books (702 Craven St., Beaufort) on Thursday, September 27, at 4:00 p.m. and Georgia poet Clifford Brooks reading from his collections Athena Departs and The Draw of Broken Eyes & Whirling Metaphysics on Tuesday, October 2, at 2:00 p.m. at the Hilton Head Island Library (11 Beach City Rd, Hilton Head). Beaufort Theatre Company brings ‘Mamma Mia!’ to the USCB stage… and not a moment too soon. By Margaret Evans, EditorIt was First Friday in downtown Beaufort, and the cast of Mamma Mia! were flash-mobbing to “Dancing Queen” in front of the big clock on Bay Street. All around them, folks were waving phones in the air, shooting pics and video, and singing along – huge, goofy smiles plastered across every face, including mine. Just an hour earlier, I’d been hunch-necked and glued to Mike’s Weather Page on Facebook, obsessively tracking Hurricane Florence, my gut a pit of anxiety. Now here I was dancing . . . jiving . . . having the time of life. Some call it a guilty pleasure. I just call it a pleasure. If loving ABBA is wrong, I don’t want to be right.

Second Annual Lowcountry Book Club Convention

Last fall’s inaugural Lowcountry Book Club Convention was an informative, empowering day of fellowship among over 100 readers and writers. The Pat Conroy Literary Center will host a second annual Convention on Saturday, October 6, from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm at the Technical College of the Lowcountry’s MacLean Hall (104 Reynolds St, Bldg 12) in Beaufort. The event is free and open to the public, sponsored in part by grants from South Carolina Humanities and a gift from the Pulpwood Queens Book Club, and presented in partnership with TCL.
