Think Globally, Read Locally

If you’re reading this after the fact, don’t despair. There’s still plenty of time to join the world in celebrating our nation’s original literary art form. And here in Beaufort, we can even think globally while acting locally, because our own resident short story specialist, T.D. Summer Sidetracks

The sluggish season is hard upon us, y’all – that lazy, languid time of year when thinking deep thoughts can be so terribly draining. So allow me to offer up a few shallow thoughts, instead, as we all wade inexorably into the hot, thick soup of another Lowcountry summer. The Bullying Thing When I was growing up, some people were mean to me and I was mean to some people. It hurt, and sure, I went home from school crying some days, and sometimes, other people went home crying because of something I did or said. But that was just kid-life. Since when did bullying become a THING, a THING that was newsworthy, law-worthy (really, we can outlaw bullying?), and, most troublingly, leads to so many young people’s deaths? What is going on that kid-on-kid misbehavior now is a not uncommon cause of self-inflicted death? Ron, Texas

Two hours ago, before the crack of dawn, I put Amelia on a “motor coach” (that’s a fancy bus) with her fifth grade class, and they are currently trundling southward on an overnight trip to SeaWorld and the Kennedy Space Center.
