Conroy was beloved by millions of readers, but Schein was his best friend from the time they met in a high school pickup basketball game in Beaufort SC until Conroy’s death in 2016. Both were popular athletes, but also outsiders as a Jew and a Catholic military brat in the small-town Bible-Belt South, and they bonded.

BAA All Members Show Runs Through Holidays

Over 90 local artists’ works are featured at the Beaufort Art Association’s All Member Show that runs at the BAA Gallery at 913 Bay Street in Beaufort now through Jan. 5.  This show features over 700 pieces of artwork including one-of-a-kind, original oil, watercolor, pastel, and acrylic paintings, photography, jewelry, prints and notecards.

The show celebrates the variety and beauty found in beadwork, from Caroline Alderman’s whimsical necklaces and Linda Raih’s highly complex designs to Carol Romano Geraghty’s sculptural pieces and the architecture-inspired work of Nancy Apy.

Winning Short Stories

Lowcountry Weekly is pleased to announce the winners of the 5th Annual Sea Island Spirit Writers Short Story Contest. Participation, like last year, was wonderful! The writers were asked to include the phrase “a skewed perspective” in a story limited to 750 words. The stories were judged by members of the Sea Island Spirit Writers, including Donna Armer, Katherine Tandy Brown, Deb Duer, Ginny Hall-Apicella, and Ellen Kelley. Thanks to everybody who entered a short story this year, and congratulations to the winners!
