Students of all levels create 3 landscapes in 3 days. Landscape artist and guest instructor TJ Cunningham will be teaching “Landscape with a Limited Palette” for three days, February 17-19, at Art League of Hilton Head. Instruction will center on creating compelling landscapes with just the three primary colors (red, yellow and blue) plus white. “With fewer color choices comes greater creativity, allowing the student to focus more on composition and abstraction,” says Cunningham. “The limitation is also a great framework for learning how to mix color.”

Nationally renowned watercolor artist David Rankin will be leading a free watercolor demonstration from 2-4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11 at The Society of Bluffton Artist’s Center for Creative Arts in Old Town Bluffton. Peggy Ellis, a popular teacher with a loyal following, returns this March to teach students how to explore capturing light in oils in her 3-day workshop “Dawn to Dusk, Capturing Light in Oils.” Instruction includes step-by-step tips and techniques, including strong composition, value studies and color harmony. All skill levels are welcome. 

The Department of Visual Art & Design at USCB presents Bearing Witness, artwork by Yvette Cummings, at the Sea Islands Center Gallery. The show opened in late January, and a reception will take place Friday, February 7, from 5 to 7:30 p.m., with a brief gallery talk at 6 p.m. The exhibit will remain on view through February 22. The Sea Islands Center Gallery is located at 1106 Carteret Street. 

NIBCAA, South Carolina’s Gullah Cultural Ambassador, will present the 24th Annual Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration and Festival throughout the month of February 2020. The annual celebration will reprise their award-winning Gullah Market, Paint and Sips and Arts Ob We People Exhibit and Sale. New features for this year’s celebration include the featured artwork “Two Pounds” by artist and educator Alvin Glenn and Gullah Tales and Songs with Ron Daise.
