YMCA’s ‘Togetherhood’ Members Get Back More Than They Give

A small but mighty group of volunteers have been making a name for themselves as the “go to” group for helping non-profits in the Lowcountry.    Founded by the YMCA five years ago, the Togetherhood initiative is the national organization’s signature program for social responsibility. Here in Beaufort County, the group has been busy growing and getting things done.  “I’m tickled to death we’re up to 24 members,” said the program’s chair, Gale Swann.

The Saving Grace of Birds

By Margaret Evans, Editor Early in the springtime of 2020, the birds abandoned me. Just when I needed them most, they simply disappeared from my world.    It was weird. We’d managed to get our daughter home from Central Europe – that drama had passed – and the days were growing long and lovely. We had plenty of time now to sit outside together, and I was desperate to watch some birds. But suddenly there were no birds to watch.   I couldn’t figure it out. My feeders were clean, full of seed and suet. I’d added a birdbath to my set-up, which somebody’d said was a ‘must’ if I hoped to attract buntings of any kind. (The Painted Bunting has long been my holy grail, but I’m eager for Indigos, too.) On top of all that, it was spring!

HELP of Beaufort Faces Biggest Challenge Yet

A new director and new location sees the nonprofit through tough times By Mindy Lucas Lori Opozda has been busy lately. Very busy.    Despite businesses closing and events cancelling due to the coronavirus outbreak, HELP of Beaufort’s spring fundraiser – an Easter ham sale – was in full swing recently.    In fact, Opozda, who is the non-profit’s relatively new director, said the ham sale had received such a response from the community, the organization ended up ordering double the amount of ham.
