Visual artists have two opportunities this autumn to create, compete,
share their work with a vast audience, and maybe even win some truly enticing prizes:
“The Art of Southern Hospitality” is a community art contest to commemorate the grand opening of the Inn at Town Center on October 21, from 5:30–7pm. The competition also benefits the Arts Council of Beaufort County, and the prizes are sponsored by the Beaufort/Port Royal Convention & Visitors Bureau. The categories and guidelines are:
Community Artist Category (High School Students +)
1st Place ~ $500 Gift Certificate to Coastal Art Supply
2nd Place ~ $250 Gift Certificate to Higher Ground
3rd Place ~ $125 Gift Certificate to Beaufort Bookstore
Middle School Class/Team Category
1st Place ~ $300 Gift Certificate to Coastal Art Supply
2nd Place ~ $125 Gift Certificate for Team Pizza Party at the Pizza Inn
3rd Place ~ $100 Gift Certificate for Beaufort Bookstore
Elementary School Class/Team Category
1st Place ~ $300 Gift Certificate to Coastal Art Supply
2nd Place ~ $125 Gift Certificate for Team Pizza Party at the Pizza Inn
3rd Place ~ $100 Gift Certificate for Beaufort Bookstore
Rules & Regulations:
· Entry fee is $5.00 payable to the Arts Council of Beaufort County
· School Class/Team Entries cannot be greater than 3’ x 5’
· All award winning pieces will be auctioned off at the Inn at Town Center Grand Opening Party on October 21
· All entries will be displayed and awards presented at the Grand Opening Party ~ Everyone welcome
· All entries must be delivered to ARTworks, home of the Arts Council of Beaufort County, 2127 Boundary Street, Suite 18A no later than 5pm on October 17, 2008
The Beaufort International Chalk Festival is a street painting competition, also at Beaufort Town Center, and presented by the Arts Council of Beaufort County. The festival itself is Saturday, November 1st, from10am to 5pm, however everyone who applies to chalk up their own $10 street square, also gets to attend a free streetpainting workshop with Chalkmaster Lee Jones on Saturday, October 18th, from 10 am to 1pm, at ARTworks.
Lee Jones is an accomplished artist who travels the world to compete in and judge chalking competitions, and she also helps other artists compete with an on-site 2-3 hour training session prior to the big event. This session begins with a PowerPoint presentation and finishes with a hand-on demonstration where the participants can try the art form and receive additional tips and suggestions. Here are the categories for the chalk festival:
– Students (ages 16+): three scholarships to the school of your choice
– Community Artist (15+):
1st Place ~ $250 ~ sponsored by Carol Madeja
2nd Place ~ $100 ~ sponsored by Bruce Doneff
3rd Place ~ $50 ~ sponsored by Nancy Pollock
– School Teams (elementary & middle/1 teacher & 4 students): three classroom art supply funds
– People’s Choice: $500 prize sponsored by The Gallery, & cover image on ACBC’s award-winning print publication ArtNews.
