Volunteer greeters and docents needed at historic John Mark Verdier House in downtown Beaufort

Interested in learning and sharing three centuries of history? The Historic Beaufort Foundation is seeking volunteer greeters and docents for the John Mark Verdier House, northern Beaufort County’s only historic house museum, and training is provided.

Volunteer docents at the John Mark Verdier House fulfill the educational mission of Historic Beaufort Foundation by interpreting Beaufort’s architectural and cultural history to visitors. 

“Over the years, we have seen many of our greeters at the house grow into the role of docent, where they help tell the story of John Mark Verdier, his house, and the history of Beaufort,” said Cynthia Jenkins, executive director of the Historic Beaufort Foundation.

“The greeters and docents play an important role in helping local residents and our visitors to learn what made Beaufort such an important location in the 1700s and 1800s, and what keeps it so special today,” she said.

Docent responsibilities include conducting tours of the Verdier House and sharing information about the property and the people who lived here. Along with the docents, greeters are the welcoming face of the Verdier House and the front door to Beaufort’s residential architecture.

The structure is one of the most popular places in Beaufort to learn about the Lowcountry’s three centuries of history, including the years since Verdier built the imposing structure around 1804.
