1958 – The State Ports Authority built Pier 21 on Battery Creek, adjacent to Port Royal Sound one of the deepest natural harbors on the East Coast. The SPA’s involvement expanded the area’s use as a deepwater port that went back even the town of Port Royal’s incorporation in 1874. The dedication was highlighted by the presence of the U.S.S. Greenwood and four Navy mine sweepers. The first commercial ship to tie up at the pier was a West German ship with a cargo of lumber from South America.

1987 – The South Carolina Coastal Council, lead by Beaufort County’s own Sen. James Waddell, identified a Jasper County site being used to deposit dredge spoils, on the lower Savannah River, as a potential location for a deep-water marine shipping terminal. The idea had been promoted for years by former Jasper County Administrator Henry Moss and former Lowcountry Council of Governments Director Buddy Thompson.

Main Street Beaufort is gearing up for the 15th Annual Beaufort Shrimp Festival, to be held Friday and Saturday, October 2-3, 2009, at the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park.

Time for area golfers to sign up for this popular event to benefit the Beaufort area Boys & Girls Club.

The Art Market at Historic Honey Horn, a juried fine art and craft show, is set for April 25 and 26th on Hilton Head Island. The event will host 80 artists from as far way as Connecticut and Wisconsin and well-known local artists will share the spotlight during this weekend-long event. 

Beaufort’s own Divine Shoes was recently invited by Lady’s Island’s own Carolina Baker to joining her at Charleston Fashion Week.
