Shooting Beaufort (and beyond)

The Backyard Tourist offers up some practical and professional advice on how to make every picture count. As soon as the sun comes out for good each spring in the Lowcountry, the azaleas explode, ornamental fruit trees pop, and all manner of wildlife joins the chorus. Meanwhile a ubiquitous clicking signals one of two things: the marsh at low tide crawling with fiddler crabs or the annual return of The Non-Indigenous Shutterbug, (known in scientific circles as Photographicas Ohio).

Backyard Tourist Points, Shoots

(A PREVIEW) There are very few situations in which it is wise to literally shoot first and ask questions later. Photography is one of them. Of course, back in the old days when dinosaurs ruled the earth this was not always true. There was this stuff called “film” that came on rolls or even cartridges and loaded into the camera in various ways taking up a great deal of space in both the camera and the camera bag.

Spring Fever Redux

The Backyard Tourist suffers acute relapse, reprints old Spring Fever piece   Past is prologue It’s true. The body of this piece originally appeared in this publication a few years back, shortly after my wife and I washed up on these shores. We were fresh – and by that I mean frigidly preserved – from a stint in Seattle. Shortly after we thawed out, purchased shorts and flip flops and we were no longer stupefied by the strange bright ball in the sky, we gazed around from our barstools and thought, What the hell were we doing in Seattle all that time? Quick, somebody play “Changes in Latitudes,” and bring us more refreshing beverages and locally sourced crustaceans!

Awaken the Dragon

An inspiring film about strength and survival… and a personal reminder of what matters most in life Timing has a way of working out doesn’t it? Personally, I’ve been faced with many obstacles lately, trying to figure out what’s best for me, my daughters, and our future. In these trying economic times, we’re all at crossroads in our lives. Recently I’ve felt pain and knew that time would heal the psychological wounds. So I’ve been trucking on, day to day, with somewhat of a “woe is me” attitude, not fully appreciating all the positives in my life. Needless to say, the last few weeks, well years, have been a bit depressing.

Filming the Revolution

Filmmaker Kevin Breslin shoots Occupy Wall Street from the inside out. Kevin Breslin is standing on a street corner somewhere in Manhattan shouting into a cell phone. Filtered by street noise and a thousand miles between us he sounds vaguely like Joe Pesci. Last year Breslin’s documentary “Living for 32” made it’s South Carolina debut at BIFF. The inspirational story of Colin Goddard, a survivor of the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre, was also nominated for an Academy Award.
