Time to Plant Your First Fall Garden

Okay, let’s be honest here for a second. We all know that no matter what ‘safeguards’ for the consumer Congress comes up with, those crooks on Wall Street will figure a way around it and keep ripping us all off.  This last financial meltdown was certainly my ‘Come to Jesus’ moment and made me realize that this whole economic boat we’re all floating on could capsize in a second. (Or even a nano second thanks to computers!) Which brings me back to the importance of vegetable gardens.

The Joy of Jewelry

  The Beaufort Art Association will highlight the work of four jewelry makers in an exhibit running from August 9th – September 12th. Christine Stanley, Susan Palmer, Charles Prezalor, and Kathleen Riley will be the featured artists in this show entitled “The Joy of Jewelry.” The public is invited to meet the artists at an opening reception from 5:30 – 7:30 pm on Friday, August 13th. Live music will be provided by the Laizee River Band.

Water Festival Parade, last Saturday morning: My family and I are lounging in beach chairs under an oak tree along Bellamy Curve. Despite the early hour and mellow breeze, we are sweltering.  Though I’m only blocks from my house, I don’t recognize anybody in this crowd, but everyone’s friendly. A young man is passing out Joe Wilson stickers. “No thanks,” I say. “I’m not doing politics today.” He politely moves on, but several folks turn to look at me. They’re all wearing Joe Wilson stickers.

Politics & Patriotism

Politicians love to cloak themselves in Patriotism, with one of their favorite ways of doing so post 9/11 being to show how much they “Support the Troops.” This year’s race for S. Carolina’s 2nd Congressional District is no different, with both candidates (and their supporters) trying to one-up each other with just how much a patriot they truly are. No one is doubting the Patriotism of either candidate. Both men are veterans. Rob Miller is a combat veteran from Iraq, and Joe Wilson has four children who are currently serving in the military.  Both candidates sacrifices are significant and worthy of respect.

Sand Sculpture Contest Returns

The Hunting Island event is back by popular demand Get those shovels and pails ready! The Friends of Hunting Island have announced their 3rd Annual Sand Sculpture Contest at Hunting Island State Park. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, July 31st from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Contestants and their cheering sections should gather at the beach in front of the Hunting Island Lighthouse. Gather your children, friends, co-workers or put a team together. Aspiring sand artists can enter as individuals or teams, and everyone will enjoy an afternoon of creativity and fun, backed by the Heritage Steel Band playing some island tunes.
