Creating a Biblical Garden

My mother was a Sunday school teacher all the years I was growing up, and she also was an avid gardener. Each Saturday she liked to sit in her garden and prepare her lesson for the next day. Whenever she came across a plant in the Bible, she would make a note of it, and often, later that afternoon, we would go in search of it at our local nursery. Over time, she created what they now call a ‘biblical garden,’ although she called it her meditation garden. She added a St. Frances of Assisi statue and a birdbath and feeder and it was quite a lovely, peaceful, and song-filled place.

Beaufort prepares to step out in style for a cause dear to its heart. This year, the Beaufort Memorial Hospital Foundation will host its 22nd annual Valentine Ball on Saturday, February 12, 2011. “Love in Any Language” is the theme, and the co-chairs are Dr. & Mrs. Paul Mazzeo and Mr. & Mrs. DeWitt Helm. The Valentine Ball is a philanthropic event like no other. The night begins with a black tie dinner with old friends, and ones newly introduced, at an elegant and intimate setting in a private home. The party then moves to the festively decorated Lyceum at Parris Island, where everyone visits, bids on an array of auction items, enjoys gourmet desserts, and dances to a live band till 1:00 am.

Famed Parsons Dance company to perform at the Arts Center The New York Times once called famed dancer/choreographer David Parsons, “One of the great movers of modern dance.” Parsons’ influence is evident in his group, Parsons Dance, which brings its contemporary style to the Arts Center at 8 p.m. Jan. 15. “Beaufort County is full of dancers, from young to old,” Kathleen Bateson, Arts Center president and CEO, said. “So we try every year to spotlight a national dance company. I think the community really appreciates having a chance to watch professionals dance up close.”

“Books Sandwiched In” Celebrates 25 Years

Books Sandwiched In, sponsored by Friends of the Beaufort County Library, returns for the 25th year on January 10, 2011, and continues every Monday through February 28, 2011. The 8-week program will be held in a different place – USCB Performing Arts Center, 801 Carteret Street, Beaufort, and at a different time – noon to 1 p.m. Co-Chairs Sherry Hirsch and Gretchen Blickle selected local personalities to review the 8 books that focus on Beaufort and South Carolina in recognition of the 300th anniversary of Beaufort. The program is free and open to everyone. Attendees are encouraged to bring their lunch or, as an alternative, purchase it from the Outtakes Café take-out table in the Performing Arts Center. Doors open at 11:30 a.m.

BCH Students Sweep Photo Awards

The Photography Club of Beaufort is pleased to announce winners of the 2010 Dale Westcott High School Nature Photography Award. This annual award is given in memory of Dale Westcott, a Habersham resident who died suddenly in 2005. Dale was a retired teacher and administrator and avid nature photographer. Barbara Westcott will award the checks and ribbons at the club meeting on January 10, 2011 at 7pm. The students, guests and general public are invited to attend and celebrate the accomplishments of these talented students.

If the ghost of artist Vincent van Gogh came looking for his missing ear, he’d be delighted to find the one fashioned by sculptor Dave Musial for the Art League of Hilton Head’s Golden Ear Award. Van Gogh, who sliced off his lobe in a fit of madness (or, as yet another story goes, got part of it hacked off in a dust-up with his friend Gauguin) is the inspiration for the Art League’s First Prize in its annual Members’ Show.

Artist Mac Rogers celebrates Beaufort’s 300-year history in painting The Beaufort Art Association is pleased to present the work of featured artist Mac Rogers, whose work will be on display at the BAA Gallery from January 10 through February 19. The title of his exhibition is “Beaufort, SC – Past, Present, and Future: A Celebration of Our Town’s 300-year History in Painting.” Beaufort’s 300th birthday is on January 17, 2011, and Mac has attempted to complement the celebration with paintings that illustrate how the city has evolved over the years and even offers a glimpse into the future.

The African-American Voice

Lowcounty residents and visitors will have the opportunity to view works by African-American artists who are among the state’s best-known and widely celebrated practitioners beginning January 20, 2011 in Beaufort. The African-American Voice exhibition runs through February 28 at the USCB Center for the Arts Gallery, 801 Carteret Street. An opening reception is planned for Thursday, January 20 from 6:00 – 7:30 PM. Ken May, executive director of the South Carolina Arts Commission will be the honored guest at the reception.

Carrying on in that tradition is Parsons Dance, which, in addition to an annual season at its home in New York City, tours nationally and internationally.

‘Tis the season to help the songbirds Cold snaps like we’ve been having (and will continue to have thru February) put life threatening stress on the birds in your garden. It’s their most dangerous time of year. Their summer insect food supply is gone and the days are shorter, so they have to work much harder in less time to find food while burning more calories to stay warm. Plus, an even bigger threat than the lack of food is a lack of water. Our days of daily thunderstorms are long gone and we are surrounded by salt water, which they can’t drink.
