Eve Miller, acclaimed pastel and oil artist, has partnered with the Beaufort Art Association (BAA) to offer a two-day workshop in Beaufort at the Retreat on Lady’s Island. The program will run from 10 am to 5 pm on Thursday, April 11, and Friday, April 12. The cost is $215 for BAA members and $225 for non-members.

A collection of artist Hank D. Herring’s iconic cultural work entitled “Sankofa: Go Back to Fetch It” will be featured at the Beaufort Art Association (BAA) from Feb. 24 through April 3. An opening reception will be held at the Gallery at 913 Bay Street in Beaufort on Friday, March 1, from 5 to 7:30 pm. Light refreshments will be served. There will also be on exhibit the work of 65 other local artists, who are members of the Gallery. The public is invited.

An exhibition of 50 historic photographs by documentary photographer Jim Lucas—A Past That Won’t Rest: Images of the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi—will be on display from February 26 – March 17 at USCB Center for the Arts Gallery. With five Academy Award nominations,Green Book is one of 2018’s leading films. Controversial. Does it accurately portray the reality of segregation and a black musician hiring a white driver for a concert series in the South? Did the writers have permission from the musician’s family? Is it another Hollywood “made to make people feel good” drama/comedy? Film critics are asking these and many other questions but, as a local walking tour guide, the film immediately made me ask, Did Beaufort have a Green Book “hotel”?

But as 80-plus visiting filmmakers, along with thousands of movie lovers, descend upon USCB Center for the Arts this week for our 13thannual international film festival, the cut feels somehow deeper. Beaufort is a movie town without a movie theater. And isn’t it ironic, don’t you think?
