The fourth show of the Coastal Stage Productions fifth season, The Last Romance, will be presented live onstage Oct 25 through Nov 3 at Coastal Stage @ AMVETS, 1831 Ribaut Rd., Port Royal, SC.
This bittersweet romantic comedy, laced with uproarious laughter, hilariously explores relationships between men and women and family in their golden years.
This heartwarming story about the transformative power of love mixes heartbreak with humor and opera with laughter. It’s anything but over-the-hill.
The story focuses on widower Ralph, (Tony Falgiani) an 80-year-old, retired railroader who once aspired to a career in opera but, instead, got sidetracked into marriage. He lives with his 77-year-old sister Rose, (Betty Pearson) a possessive woman who was married once, but hasn’t seen her husband since he left her 22 years ago for another woman. Angry and bitter, she’s determined to hold on to Ralph.
On an otherwise ordinary day in a routine life, Ralph takes a different path on his daily walk – one that leads him to the local dog park where he spots attractive, white-haired Carol, (Margy Oehlert) and an unexpected second chance to regain a happiness that seemed all but lost. Ralph is mischievous, flirtatious, and incurably romantic, and relying on a renewed boyish charm he attempts to woo Carol. Embarking on the trip of a lifetime, he regains a happiness that seemed all but lost.
This delightful cast of Beaufort County talent is rounded out by the character of the young man, (Rodney Vaughn) who acts as the operatic muse to smoothly move along the love story.
‘The Last Romance’ is directed by Christine Grefe with assistance by Gregg Steele Heppner.
