Back in 2025, friends Jeff Baker and Anne Dickerson, lamenting the absence of movie-going options in Beaufort, put their heads together, brainstormed some ideas, and pitched Bonnie Hargrove, Director of the USCB Center for the Arts, the idea of screening movies twice a month at the Arts Center. To help defray costs and keep movie tickets affordable, Baker and Dickerson created the Movies on Monday Club.
Since then, with membership support, USCB has screened nearly a dozen great movies, including Academy Award-winners and heartwarming romantic comedies. The club has grown over the course of the year, and now has 70-plus members.
“The Movies on Monday Club plays a vital role in Beaufort, making movies available to the greater community by underwriting the costs,” Hargrove said. No stranger to start up arts organizations, Hargrove is involved with club, advising them on movie choices, handling the screening logistics, and the ins and outs of working with the University. “There are some rules we all need to follow, and some unusual caveats attached to screening certain films here,” she says. For instance, they cannot use the name of films in advertising or news articles such as this.
That said, the Movies on Mondays Club is excited to announce the September 14th screening of a classic film, released in 1942, starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, and winner of three Academy Awards.
In doing so, Movies on Monday is providing an opportunity fewer than 1% of us have ever enjoyed: Bogart and Bergman on the Silver Screen, larger than life, remembering Paris and asking Sam to play it again.
To celebrate this occasion and to thank its members—new and old—the club is hosting a pre-movie reception at 6:00 pm, with appetizers and drinks in keeping with the Moroccan theme of Rick’s Café Americain. This reception is open to the movie going public.
Baker hopes that more Beaufort area residents will consider joining. “Member benefits include discounted tickets, member only events, comradery with fellow cinephiles, and the inevitable good feelings that result from supporting the arts in your community.” Individual memberships are $50, and family memberships are $75 annually, and are tax deductible
The Movies on Monday Club has more great films lined up to close out this year, including one about a globe-trotting chef and author of Kitchen Confidential, a psychological black comedy written and directed by James Sweeney, and a comedy-drama directed by Bradley Cooper, loosely based on the life of English comedian John Bishop.
