As communities across the nation commemorate the 250th anniversary of American Independence, one Lowcountry theatrical production is ensuring that the stories of Gullah heroes and sheroes are no longer left untold.
Gullah Traveling Theater, Inc. proudly presents the acclaimed Da’ Gullah American Revolutionary Experience on Saturday, July 18, at the May River Theatre in Bluffton, with performances at 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
Presented as part of GTTI’s Gullah National Salute to Service, this original musical production shines a light on the overlooked contributions of the Gullah people during the American Revolution. Through dynamic storytelling, live
music, humor, and historical interpretation, audiences encounter the courage, sacrifice, and determination of Black patriots whose lives helped shape the birth of the United States.
While many Americans know the names of Revolutionary War generals and statesmen, few have heard the stories of the enslaved and free Black men and women of the Lowcountry who navigated impossible choices in pursuit of liberty, family, and survival. Da’ Gullah American Revolutionary Experience brings those stories to life with authenticity, compassion, and unforgettable theatrical artistry.
Since its premiere, the production has captivated audiences throughout South Carolina and continues to earn enthusiastic praise for its powerful performances, historical significance, and educational value. Schools, community organizations, and history enthusiasts alike have embraced the production as a compelling addition to South Carolina’s observance of America’s Semiquincentennial.
“Our mission has always been to preserve and share Gullah history through the performing arts,” said Anita Singleton Prather, Founder and Executive Director of Gullah Traveling Theater. “These are American stories. They deserve to be remembered, celebrated, and passed from one generation to the next.”
More than entertainment, the production invites audiences to reflect on the complexity of freedom, the enduring strength of the Gullah people, and the remarkable contributions of those whose voices have too often been omitted from traditional history.
Whether attending with family, church, civic organizations, students, or friends, audiences will leave inspired by stories of resilience, courage, and hope that continue to resonate today.
Tickets for both Bluffton performances are on sale now. Because seating is limited, advance ticket purchases are encouraged.
Members of the media are invited to attend. Interviews with cast members, historians, and Gullah Traveling Theater leadership are available upon request. High-resolution photography, promotional materials, and additional background information are included in the accompanying press kit.
