Midwife Sara Edwards

LowCountry Midwifery Services proudly announces a major milestone as Certified Professional Midwife Sara Edwards facilitates her 100th homebirth, just weeks before marking four years in solo midwifery practice.

Since founding her independent homebirth practice in June 2022, Edwards has provided personalized, relationship-centered maternity care to families throughout the Lowcountry and Coastal Empire. The milestone reflects not only 100 babies welcomed into the world, but also hundreds of prenatal visits, postpartum appointments, educational consultations, and lasting relationships with the families she serves.

Edwards began her holistic birth work journey in 2012 as a doula, supporting women and families through pregnancy, labor, and postpartum recovery. She later earned a Bachelor of Science in Midwifery from The Midwives College of Utah, became a Certified Professional Midwife, and established LowCountry Midwifery Services.

“Reaching 100 births in less than four years of solo practice is incredibly humbling,” Edwards said. “Each family who chooses midwifery care places an extraordinary amount of trust in me. This milestone belongs to every mother, father, baby, mentor, colleague, friend, and family member who has been part of this journey.”

The achievement follows a period of remarkable personal and professional perseverance. While building her practice, Edwards overcame significant challenges, including the loss of her home in a devastating fire and periods of public scrutiny. Throughout those experiences, she remained dedicated to supporting families and advocating for safe, evidence-informed community birth options across the Lowcountry and Coastal Empire.

Known for her holistic approach to maternity care, Edwards emphasizes informed consent, shared decision-making, education, nutrition, and individualized support throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. Her work reflects a commitment to preserving birth choices while honoring the long tradition of community-based midwifery.

In addition to serving families, Edwards is a founding member of Lowcountry Birth Collective and was recently elected Vice President of the Palmetto Association of Licensed Midwives (PALM), where she advocates for maternal health, professional accountability, and expanded access to midwifery care throughout South Carolina.

“As I celebrate this milestone, my focus remains exactly where it has always been—supporting healthy mothers, healthy babies, and strong families,” Edwards said. “I am honored to be part of their stories and grateful for the trust they continue to place in me.”
