plunge-robesYes, the season is here again and it’s time for a swim! For those new to this Annual New Year’s Day event sponsored by Friends of Hunting Island, 100 % of the proceeds go to fund Discover Carolina, an educational program which brings Beaufort County 3rd, 5th, and 7th graders to the park.

Now in its sixth year, Pelican Plunge is the Friends of Hunting Island’s main event in support of Discover Carolina. To date, more than 3,000 students have visited our state park for a day of hands-on learning. The 2013 Plunge raised about $4,000 and event organizers are hoping to blow through that amount, so as to bring more students to the park in 2014.

plunge-runAt approximately 1pm on New Year’s Day, thrill seekers will leap into the frigid waters off of Hunting Island State Park to greet the New Year. In the past, we have had hundreds of costumed Plungers and many more spectators cheering them on. It’s a whole lot of fun for a good cause!

So, come on out New Year’s Day to get wet or provide encouragement. Plungers please raise funds from friends and family to contribute. For those not plunging, please come on out and support a Plunger, or find someone who is plunging before the day and make a contribution. It is money very well spend.

For more information email Fundraising Chair Chuck Lurey at cnr224@embarqmail.com. Enjoy the holidays and if you cannot Plunge, come out and watch the daredevils!
