Organizations with offerings that benefit the planet or its people are invited to participate as an exhibitor or sponsor of Hilton Head Island’s first Earth Day Celebration.  The April 2nd Earth Day Celebration on Hilton Head Island will celebrate the natural environment, but also teach and connect attendees with tools and resources to care for its social, environmental, and economic well being.

The Earth Day Celebration is presented by Hilton Head Monthly and Experience Green, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located on Hilton Head Island that provides experiential education focusing on the what, why, how and when of sustainability.

In 1970, United States Senator Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day as an environmental teach-in to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s natural environment.  Earth Day is now celebrated in more than 175 countries.  The Earth Day Celebration on April 2nd will be the first of its kind on Hilton Head Island, a community originally developed around preservation of the natural environment.  The event’s scope of outreach includes Savannah, Charleston, and all of Beaufort County.

This family friendly event will offer experiential learning activities and entertainment that is fun, engaging, and impactful.  The Glidden Green Resource Expo will showcase products and services to care for the planet and its people.  There will be a GreenZone for kids, a Celebration Stage to host entertainment including Trash Tawkin’, a children’s play to educate on recycling, as well as give aways and demonstrations from participants including Lowcountry Rain Barrels, Coastal Discovery Museum, The Greenery, and Lightning Bugz Low Speed Vehicles.

A Green Art Exhibit will showcase local student art, and each project will have an environmental message.  Selected pieces from the exhibit will go to the Coastal Discovery Museum to remain on display through April, which is Earth Month.  The art must meet specific criteria and be made from materials that can be recycled, to emphasize the residential recycling program parameters that will launch on Hilton Head Island the day before the event.

The Kickin’ Asphalt bike group will provide a bike valet to encourage commuting by bike to the event, and invites bikers to participate in a group ride that morning that will finish at the Shelter Cove Community Park event site.  The Earth Day Celebration will also host a Green Transportation Station, sponsored by Hilton Head Hyundai and Volkswagen, showcasing earth friendly transportation including hybrid vehicles, bikes, electric vehicles, and more!  The onsite Republic Waste Stations will provide recycling and food composting, which supports sustainable waste management.  Attendees of all experience levels are invited to scale the climbing wall for a bird’s eye view of the event.

Attendees can participate in the Pino Gelato “Save the Planet” Scavenger Hunt to learn about green resources in the area, and upon completion will be entered in ongoing drawings for prizes from event exhibitors.  The afternoon activities will include the presentation of the winner of “Get Your Green Score” drawing from the survey hosted on HiltonHeadMonthly.com.  The winner will receive a four night vacation in San Diego to participate in the Stars and Stripes Experience that includes airfare and accommodations for two.

The Earth Day Celebration and Experience Green appreciates its sponsors – Hilton Head Monthly, Sustainable Solutions, Sun Printing, The Greenery, Republic Waste Services, Glidden, Pino Gelato, Outside Hilton Head, Kickin’ Asphalt Bike Club, Hilton Head Hyundai and Volkswagen, and the Coastal Clean Water Festival.  Each organization provides services or products promote sustainable practices or supports care of the environment.

“This event adds to the momentum of green steps that move Hilton Head Island forward on the journey to sustainability for long term benefit environmentally, economically, and socially.  The community is embracing the mission of Experience Green and supports this fun, learning experience,” says Experience Green Founder, Teresa Wade, “there will also be some unique surprise elements at the event to raise awareness about waste and climate change that are exceptionally exciting!”
