Port Royal: “No faurer or fytter place”

Excerpts from the book Images of America: Port Royal, by Wendy Nilsen Pollitzer The Town of Port Royal is in the midst of making significant history… again. The incorporated town has seen its ups and downs for over a century; and now, Port Royal is on the brink of prosperity. Many believe the current slate of events will the propeller that finally puts the quaint coastal village on the map. With the sale of the port property, the completion of the Cypress Wetlands project and surprises planned for The Shed and Lemon Island Marina, the Town of Port Royal is prepared to stand tall and distinguished once more.

Women Build… among other things

Another great LowCountry Habitat project is in the works… and there’s jazz involved. Women. The word conjures many images, surely, but for me it’s just a big question mark. They might as well wear a tight green outfit with a symbol in the middle like Frank Gorshin’s Riddler on the 1960’s Batman television program. I’ll never understand them, but I won’t give up trying either. All anatomy aside, there is something inherently different in the genetic and chemical makeup of men and women, just as God intended. Upset, I promptly shared the picture on my own FB page, with the simple comment, “Wow.”

Peer Pressure? Nah, we’re grown-ups…

It’s about 8:20 on a Tuesday morning as I inch my car forward in the drop-off line at my daughter’s school. It’s a long line this morning, and I watch the children emerge from the cars, one by one, with a growing sense of dread. They look like typical fifth graders – fresh faces, tidy school uniforms, clean and scrubbed, hair neatly combed. I feel sick.
