“Bursting Sun,” an exceptional photograph by Bluffton High’s Andres Salvador, took home top honors in the Photography Club of Beaufort’s annual Dale Westcott Memorial Nature Contest.  Each year the Photography Club of Beaufort awards prizes to the best nature photographs submitted by area high schools.

    Since 2000, Art League of Hilton Head has awarded an annual scholarship in the amount of $2000 to a graduating high school senior who is studying or living on Hilton Head Island and attending a local high school.

Mark Maute: Me and My Friends

When Mark Maute left teaching art in 1977, he threw away all his art supplies and equipment. Thirty-five years later, after moving to Hilton Head Island full-time, he took his first art class at the Academy of Art League of Hilton Head. During this journey, which began in 2012, Mark has taken many classes to sharpen and polish his skills and abilities. He likes to think that this has been his retraining in retirement.

A Word About Language

When you’ve been penning columns for 15 years, like me, you sometimes approach them with a degree of weariness. (Been there, said that, and who cares, anyway?) If you’re also approaching deadline, that weariness can be tinged with panic. Weary panic is an unpleasant sensation.
