Beaufort Children’s Theatre presents ‘The Wizard of Oz’

USCB Center for the Arts and The Beaufort Children’s Theatre will present the beloved family musical, “The Wizard of OZ, young performers edition” May 17 and 18 at 7 pm and Sunday, May 19 at 3 pm.  This one-hour edition begins when a tornado rips through Kansas, Dorothy (Scarlett Mercier) and her dog, Toto, (Maren Tillapaugh) are whisked away in their house to the magical land of Oz.

Beaufort Cultural District Site of Upcoming Sit-In

The city of Beaufort’s Cultural District Advisory Board has scheduled a sit-in. The event, Friday, May 10 at 6 pm in the University of South Carolina Center for the Arts Center on Carteret Street will be the launch date for the CDAB’s newest project designed to draw attention to the area’s multitude of cultural opportunities and the one-year-old free public shuttle.

Beaufort History Museum’s Pearls of Wisdom

Beaufort History Museum will present its fifth annual Tea on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 from 1 – 4 pm at Dataw Island Club.  The popular event, the Museum’s principal fundraiser, will showcase national best selling author Kristy Woodson Harvey, who is using the occasion to launch her newest book, The Southern Side of Paradise. Local author Patricia Bee and her book, Mama’s Pearls, will also be featured. Both women will talk about their books and the importance of family, heritage and communal traditions to southern culture.

Book Launch for New Novel Exploring the Life of Robert Smalls  

Trouble the Water, the debut novel from Rebecca Dwight Bruff, is inspired by the larger-than-life true story of Robert Smalls, the first African American hero of the Civil War. On May 13, 1862, the enslaved Smalls commandeered the Confederate vessel The Planter in Charleston harbor, which he sailed to the Union blockade, securing freedom for his own family and the enslaved crew with him. Smalls served with distinction as Union captain of the Planterduring the duration of the war and was later a U.S. Congressman representing his native lowcountry.

‘Southern Comforts’ Quilt Show Returns

The Sea Island Quilters will present their biannual “Southern Comforts” quilt show on Friday, May 10, and Saturday, May 11, at the National Guard Armory (Beaufort Readiness Center), 1 Cavalry Lane, Beaufort, SC (Highway 21 near the Marine Corps Air Station). The hours are from 10 am to 5 pm on Friday and 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday. Admission is $7.00 for adults. Children under 12 are free.
