Susan Graber, a local artist best known for her portraits, was recently awarded “Best In Show” for her portrait entitled, “Ellen” (left) at the Beaufort Art Association’s 56th annual Spring Show. She had two portraits in the show, both stunning works of art.
Area art enthusiasts will have another opportunity to see more of Graber’s work (including this portrait of Malcolm Goodridge) at a Portrait Show at USCB Center for the Arts from April 13 – 30. A reception will be held there on Friday, April 21, from 5:30 – 7:30 pm.
Originally from Connecticut, Graber met her future husband Scott Graber at George Washington University in Washington, DC; shortly afterwards, they both moved to Beaufort in the early ‘70’s, where Scott opened his law practice. In the early 1990’s, she left her job as a real estate paralegal to devote herself full-time to painting. She took classes at the Gibbes Museum in Charleston and the Savannah College of Art & Design, as well as participating in various local and national workshops.
Graber began painting portraits in the 1990’s. Since then, she has completed over 100 commissions. She works from her studio next to her home in Port Royal, SC and in her loft at the Eclipse Mill in North Adams, MA. For more information, go to her website at www.susangraber.com.
