green-jonathan“Celebrate the Arts,” a two-day community festival including a high school art competition, lecture by eminent artist Jonathan Green, and arts activities for adults and children opens Friday afternoon, March 4th on the University of South Carolina Beaufort campus in Beaufort’s historic district. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at USCB is sponsoring the festival with generous support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the USCB Studio Art faculty.

“Celebrate the Arts” will kick off with USCB’s first juried arts competition for high school students.  Over 100 entries are competing. The top three prizes are art scholarships of $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000 to attend USCB’s BA in Studio Art. The public is encouraged to attend the awards ceremony at 1:00pm on Friday, March 4th in the Center for the Arts on the Historic Beaufort campus.  Selected student artwork will be on display all afternoon.

South Carolina artist Jonathan Green will be honored with a reception and will present a lecture Friday evening, March 4th.  (Read our exclusive interview with Jonathan here.) Reservations are required for the lecture and reception and can be made by calling 843-208-8247.

Saturday’s “Celebrate the Arts” events will include arts activities for children, food vendors and local artists’ works displayed for purchase from 11:00-3:00.   At 1:00 pm, USCB faculty members and invited artists will hold a multi-media panel conversation on the history, philosophy and creation of art entitled “What is art? What is its function? How does it “work”? A variety of works and philosophies will be presented that challenge traditional notions of art and encourage new ways of appreciating art and its function in society.

Tours of the Historic Beaufort campus’ new arts studios, ceramics laboratory, graphic design computer laboratory and galleries will be given throughout the festival.
