A Three Day Plein Air Workshop in Oils or Pastels
Gary Baughman will be teaching students how to paint more compelling scenery in Lovely Skies, Seas and Trees, a 3-day plein air workshop sponsored by Art League of Hilton Head February 15-17, 2022. The class will most benefit intermediate oil or pastel painters, or beginners with good drawing skills.
Baughman has an interest in the scientific understanding of light and color, and will be sharing his insights about creating accurate and interesting compositions, shapes and values. Baughman will demonstrate how to capture changing light and shadows in the alla-prima style as the sun moves through the sky, and will offer one-on-one instructions for students at their easels. Students are encouraged to work small (9″x12″ or 11″x14″) so one painting can be finished per day.
“Gary is a natural teacher,” says Amy Wehrman, Art League Academy manager. “He has a patient, encouraging teaching style, and gives gentle, positive critiques. His goal is ‘making strengths stronger and weaknesses irrelevant.’ Students will come away with more confidence and a clearer understanding of their strengths.”
Baughman has received numerous accolades and awards as both an oil and pastel painter. He has won Honorable Mention, an Award of Excellence, and a Merit Award in Southeastern Pastel Society national juried exhibitions, and Best of Show and First Place in exhibitions held by Paulding Fine Arts Association in Dallas, GA. “I try to move [people] to identify with the subject matter, be it large as a mountain or as small as a rosebud by creating my own individual interpretation. As an artist, I engage the viewer by re-interpretation of reality through manipulation and exaggeration of shape, value, color, line, texture, and balance.“
The workshop is $360 for Art League members, $400 for non-members. In case of inclement weather, sessions will take place indoors in a classroom setting. No materials are provided in this workshop.
