ANNOUNCING THE "HUNTING ISLAND MEMORIES" ESSAY CONTEST

As part of the celebration commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the South Carolina Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Department, Hunting Island State Park and the Friends of Hunting Island are sponsoring an exciting weekend of activities August 2nd and 3rd, 2008 on Hunting Island.
To kick off the celebrations, the Friends of Hunting Island and Lowcountry Weekly are organizing The Hunting Island Memories Essay Contest.  So many of us have vivid childhood memories of Hunting Island, or perhaps memories that occurred only last summer!  Just 16 miles from Beaufort, Hunting Island has always been a place to swim, camp, frolic, relax, fish, kayak, hike, walk the dog, bicycle, visit the Nature Center, and some many wonderful activities.  Our most popular SC state park is truly a jewel, and it’s right in our backyard.
So, what do you remember?  What something special happened to you, your family, or with a friend out on Hunting Island?
In 250 words or less, tell us your special memory that happened on, or has to do with, Hunting Island State Park.  Feel free to send us copies of photos that help to tell your story of something special that happened at our beautiful state park.
Selected finalist essays will appear over several issues in the pages of the Lowcountry Weekly leading up to the August weekend celebration.  All finalist essays will then be entered into a final judging for prizes.

    There are (3) entry categories:

    K through 6th grade
    Ages 12 through 18
Adults (over 18 years of age)

Prizes for each of the three winning essays will be a Park Passport (a one-year pass to all SC State Parks) or a package of Hunting Island-themed items.  The deadline for entries is April 15th, 2008.  Please note that all essays and photos become the property of the Friends of Hunting Island, and may be used for publication and/or display in promoting the 75th Anniversary event and subsequent park activities.
