BirdBirthday 3 Great Egret Chicks JohnAlbertThe Town of Port Royal invites the community to come celebrate the 7thAnnual Birthday for the Birdson Saturday, May 4 from 8 – 11 am. This unique event showcases Beaufort County’s wonderful natural resources, the Port Royal Rookery and Cypress Wetlands Trail, along with the incredible wildlife within.  


This exciting free Community Celebrationfocuses on the various species living in this habitat. With support from the Fripp Island Audubon Club and other organizations, it will be an informative and fun day to enjoy the Port Royal Rookery and Wetlands. Celebrate the birth of hundreds of new wading birds and witness the wonder of nature up close!

Representatives from the Fripp Island Wildlife Department will be on site showcasing many inhabitants of the wetlands, including alligators and other species along with the birds. Master Naturalists will be there to escort you – and educate you – on a tour of the boardwalk through the wetlands; they’ll be happy to answer your questions!

Sign-up for the Tours will begin at 8:15 am, and they will begin at 8:30. A Scavenger Hunt forBirdBirthday Great Egret Chicks JohnAlbert the children will start at 9 am, with a check-off list to help them on their search. When their hunt is completed, they can proudly show off, wearing the well-earned words, “I Found All the Wildlife Species at the Port Royal Rookery.” 

On this fun day of celebrations, there will also be Lowcountry wildlife face painting, local school children’s artwork to view, a Birthday Cake for all to enjoy, and kazoos to play in the background as you tip your bird hats. Look for the Costumed Bird Greeters and the 1979 Silver Toyota Land Cruiser Pick-Up festively decorated with Birds on this morning of fun and education for the whole community.

The event would not exist without the creative commitment of Pete Richards, who wished to share his love of birding. In Pete’s own words, “The importance of the Birthday is making wildlife and birds accessible to community, families and children.” The Town of Port Royal has generously helped, along with Audubon and the many volunteers, to provide this fun celebration to the community and their families.
