Gullah Traveling Theater Presents Decoration Day 2026

With Memorial Day approaching, Gullah Traveling Theater, Inc. (GTTI) invites the community and visitors to experience Decoration Day 2026, a powerful, updated full-stage musical that brings to life the true origins of Memorial Day.

This annual homecoming event is a part of the 41st Original Gullah Festival of South Carolina celebrating the contributions and history of the Gullah people (May 21 – 24. Visit: www.originalgullahfestival.org for more information.) Performances for this updated show will take place Thursday, May 21 (7 PM) and Saturday, May 23 (3 PM) at the University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB) Performing Arts Center, offering audiences a meaningful and moving way to reflect, remember, and celebrate our nation’s history.

Rooted in the traditions of formerly enslaved people in the Lowcountry, Decoration Day tells the story of one of the earliest known Memorial Day observances—honoring fallen Union soldiers through song, tribute, and community gathering. Through original music, storytelling, and vivid performances, GTTI brings this powerful history to life in a way that resonates across generations.

“This production invites audiences to experience Memorial Day with deeper meaning,” said GTTI’s Deputy Director, Scott Gibbs. “It is

a story of remembrance, resilience, and gratitude—one that deserves to be shared and celebrated.”

As part of its broader 2026 Gullah National Salute to Service, GTTI will close its season with Da’ Gullah American Revolutionary Experience, highlighting the contributions of Gullah Geechee “heroes and sheroes” during the American Revolution.

That production will be performed June 27 in Beaufort and July 18 in Bluffton at the May River Theatre.
Online ticket sales for the Revolutionary Experience open May 26, 2026. Advance tickets are available through cast and staff.

The 2026 Gullah National Salute to Service is presented in partnership with Visit Beaufort and Discover South Carolina, supporting cultural tourism and heritage preservation across the region.

Tickets are now available online at https://www.gullahkinfolktravelingtheater.org. Guests are encouraged to reserve now, as seating is limited.
