Local author Diana Bosse is celebrating the release of her newest book, Peyton the Pelican, The Odd Bird of Audubon Pond, a whimsical and educational children’s story inspired by the beautiful birds of Hilton Head Island and the surrounding Lowcountry.
Bosse’s first book, The Perks of Having Cancer: An Inspirational, Positive and Humorous View of a Not-So-Inspirational, Positive or Humorous Situation, documented her personal journey through a lymphoma diagnosis and treatment.
“Fortunately,” states Diana, “my latest book is not a sequel to my first!”
Inspired by the shorebirds she has observed throughout the island, Peyton the Pelican, The Odd Bird of Audubon Pond follows a curious pelican who ventures away from the beach and encounters a variety of wading birds along the way. Readers of all ages will learn about popular birds native to the Lowcountry and the southeastern coast through a charming and engaging story.
The book is a true community collaboration, featuring illustrations by Bluffton cartoonist Steve Wallace and a glossary complete with bird photographs contributed by twelve different Hilton Head photographers. The 36-page, full-color hardback book highlights the creativity and talent found right here in the Lowcountry.
Peyton the Pelican, The Odd Bird of Audubon Pond is available for $19.99. Autographed copies can be purchased locally at By Hand Ink, Coligny Hardware, the Harbour Town Lighthouse & Museum, Island Child, Lighthouse Kid’s Co., The Shell Shop, Watusi and Wild Birds Unlimited, with additional stores on Hilton Head and in Bluffton and Beaufort being added soon. The book can also be purchased by contacting the author directly at dianabosse@aol.com.
Diana Bosse has been writing her whole life—mostly in diaries, on grocery lists, and occasionally in company newsletters—along with bylines in The Cincinnati Enquirer, The Island Packet, Ladies’ Home Journal, Southern Living and Women’s Day. Writing an actual book, however, still feels like a very big deal to her.
Diana lives on Hilton Head Island with her husband, Steve, and crazy cat, Manny Carl.
