Musical Director Frederick Devyatkin and the musicians of the Beaufort Symphony will be serving up musical treats of the season on Thursday, December 17th and Sunday, December 20th at the USCB Performing Arts Auditorium! The BSO never lets a season pass without programming some excerpts from ‘The Nutcracker Suite’. This year it will be The Pas de Deux, with its exquisite cello solo introduction, as well as The Waltz of the Flowers. According to Devyatkin, this music is loved by millions simply because the composer, Tchaikovsky, wrote such heart wrenchingly beautiful melodies! People want to hear it again and again just because it has stood the test of time. As always, it brings to mind the images of the classical ballet – an army of rowdy mice, sweet things to eat, and the story of a fairy tale princess won by a handsome prince.
Maestro Devyaktin is also an extremely accomplished violinist! Together with his wife Katie, he will perform the Corelli ‘Christmas Concerto’, which is scored for two violins and string orchestra. Here again the music is so achingly beautiful that it brings tears to your eyes.
Katie Devyatkin serves as The BSO’s concertmaster. Those who are long time supporters of the orchestra note that Fred always signals the last curtain call with a kiss to his wife. Both Devyatkins attended the prestigious Manhattan School of Music in New York City. They have two musically talented children. Eleanor, former member of the BSO, is now in her second year in college. Peter, a student of piano and cello, is a member of the Beaufort Youth Orchestra.
Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) was an Italian violinist and composer of the Baroque period. Colleagues and aristocracy held him in high esteem during his lifetime, and he remains popular in western culture today. He wrote a large number of works for small ensemble – violins and strings, and left a comfortable fortune to his family. A portion of his ‘Christmas Concerto’, Op. 6 No.8 can be heard in the soundtrack of the film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. The composer is also referred to frequently in the novel, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin.
The more popular side of ‘Holiday Treats’ includes all the music that is so satisfying to hear at this time of the year – Carol of the Bells, O Holy Night, Winter Wonderland, plus a chance to sing along with the orchestra.
Maestro Devyatkin feels that some of best composers today are writing for Hollywood films. For that reason he has included the score from a new found classic Christmas story, ‘The Polar Express’.
