Fairy tales collide and “happily ever after” gets a reality check when Beaufort Theatre Company presents Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s award-winning musical Into the Woods at the USCB Center for the Arts, September 26–27 and October 2–4, 2026.
Featuring familiar characters including Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, a Witch, and a charming prince or two, Into the Woods weaves together some of the world’s best-known fairy tales in a story that is funny, imaginative, moving, and surprisingly human.
At the heart of the musical is a simple question: What happens after “happily ever after?”
As each character ventures into the woods in pursuit of a wish, their stories become intertwined in unexpected ways. What begins as a whimsical fairy-tale adventure soon becomes a thoughtful exploration of family, friendship, community, consequences, and the choices we make along the way.
“Community theatre is such an important part of what we do at the Center for the Arts.” said Bonnie Hargrove, Director of the USCB Center for the Arts. “Into the Woods gives our local performers the opportunity to take on one of musical theatre’s most celebrated works.”
The production is directed by Libby Ricardo, USCB Associate Professor of Theater and Interdisciplinary Studies. Libby is an award-winning actress, director, and teacher, Ricardo has appeared in stage, television, and film productions throughout the country. Music direction is by Jordan Plair, a musician and music educator with more than 11 years of experience leading choirs, ensembles, and students. Jordan brings a great deal of enthusiasm for choral singing and music to the Beaufort Theatre Company. The fairy tale comes to life through the set design and scenic artistry of Greg Rawls and Miranda Johnson.
