The Society of Bluffton Artists (SOBA) will be hosting a unique Holidays fundraiser at their SOBA Art School on Thursday, November 20th from 2:00-4:00pm (during the weekly Thursday Bluffton Farmers Market). They will be presenting a book signing for 100 Things to Do in the South Carolina Lowcountry Before You Die, with authors Lynn & Cele Seldon, to support the 18th annual Naomi McCracken Scholarship Fund.

The new book by the Seldons was released last month and completes their trilogy of area travel guides for Reedy Press, along with their bestsellers, 100 Things to Do in Charleston Before You Die and 100 Things to Do in Savannah Before You Die. Filled with dozens of places to see, adventures to experience, sights to behold, sips and bites to taste, and places to shop until you drop, from Edisto Island to Daufuskie Island (including Edisto Island, Walterboro, Beaufort, St. Helena Island, Yemassee, Ridgeland, Hardeeville, Okatie, Bluffton, Hilton Head Island, and Daufuskie Island), the book serves as a reminder of all that the area has to offer and makes the perfect holiday gift for newcomers, long-time residents, and first-time and veteran visitors.

Providing college scholarships to selected local graduating high school seniors planning to pursue degrees in the visual arts since 2007, the Naomi McCracken Scholarship—in honor ofone of the seven founding members of SOBA—is supported by the generous donations of Naomi’s family, as well as additional funds raised by the non-profit organization. Eligible students submit a portfolio of their work and a paper on their achievements and career plans. Scholarship finalists are chosen by art teachers at local Bluffton high schools and interviewed by the SOBA board of directors, ultimately being awarded to students based on their talent and dedication.

In addition to the scholarship, the Society also hosts meet-the-artist events, monthly exhibits by member artists, featured artist receptions, and an annual Judged Show that is open to all artists. The SOBA Art School hosts workshops and art classes for adults and children, from beginners to intermediates, along with summer camps for kids.

The book signing will be part of SOBA’s Holiday Market, opening November 3rd, featuring all kinds of local artists’ holiday works, in addition to their regularly featured local and regional artists creations in a variety of mediums, including oil paintings, acrylics, watercolors, handcrafted jewelry, photography, ceramics, sculptures, mixed media, and more.

The event is free and open to the public, with proceeds of books sold supporting the scholarship fund. For more information, contact the Society of Bluffton Artists at 843-757-6586 or at www.sobagallery.com.
