FreedomDay2018Mitchelville Preservation Project will present The Freedom Experience: Men of Mitchelville, to celebrate National Freedom Day. The Freedom Experience is a series of programs that tell the story of Mitchelville, the first self-governed freedman’€™s town in America. The Freedom Experience: Men of Mitchelville will be Saturday, February 10, 2018, at Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park (formerly Fish Haul Creek Park), 226 Beach City Road, Hilton Head Island, SC 29926 from 11 am -€“ 1 pm. There is no admission, but donations are welcomed.

“€œMitchelville is a quintessential freedom story. It is only right that the Mitchelville Preservation Project celebrates the notion of Freedom in every and any way possible,”€ says Ahmad Ward, Executive Director of Mitchelville Preservation Project. “€œThe Men of Mitchelville highlights a few of the important figures that made Mitchelville the important part of history that it is. By sharing these narratives, we hope we will encourage the public to learn more about this history and ponder on the true value of Freedom.”€

National Freedom Day is a United States observance that honors the signing by Abraham Lincoln of a joint House and Senate resolution that later became the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. President Lincoln signed the Amendment outlawing slavery on February 1, 1865, although it was not ratified by the states until later.

The Freedom Experience: Men of Mitchelville will be presented for one-day only and is a family-friendly event in the park, food and beverages will be available for purchase at the nearby Cherry Hill School. Seating is available, so chairs are welcomed. In the case of rain, the presentation will be moved to St James Baptist Church, 209 Beach City Road, Hilton Head Island, SC.
